Our cover photo for the current issue comes from photographer and writer Karen Boissonneault-Gauthier. It’s a deeply evocative impression of a girl engrossed in her fiddle. The image is called “Strings of Youth,” and we think that concentrated immersion reflects the writing you’ll find in the Wild Musette Journal.
We asked Karen about this particular image, her process, and use of music in her visual artwork. This is what she had to say.
The Ballad of Molly Malone is a popular Irish song sung in pubs around the world and especially in Dublin. It tells of young Molly, a poor fishmonger, selling her wares of cockles and mussells from her pushcart. We’re featuring an adaptation of that song as the title piece for the Wild Musette Journal #1701.
Writer Shannon Connor Winward drew on the popular song to create her own, much darker, version. In the original, as in many good Irish ballads, the hero dies, though we don’t know the circumstances. Winward follows up on Poe’s theme of being being buried alive to give new meaning to the song’s refrain of “Alive, Alive-Oh!”
The Wild Musette Journal is on target for a March 15, 2017 release date. We’ve received the proof from the printer and all looks good. That’s it in the photo. The secret is out of the bag: we’ve selected “The Ballad of Molly Malone” by Shannon Connor Winward as the title piece for this journal issue. We’ll be doing a followup post on that so be sure to check back.
The interior graphics and layout look good. We’ve also got the ebook versions created in epub and azw3 formats. Actually, we are having a debate about Kindle formats at the moment. Should we support them or just the open epub standard? Would love to hear from some readers about that.
So stay tuned, the Wild Musette Journal #1701 – The Ballad of Molly Malone is about to be launched. And we couldn’t be more pleased.
Join us for an evening of Irish set dancing with special guest caller Larre Reeves. Larre can often be found in County Clare dancing or playing the concertina and mandolin. We are lucky that he will be sharing his favorite dances with us. Beginners are welcome and all dances will be taught.
Irish set dancing is coming to Chapel Hill! Wild Musette is sponsoring a monthly Irish set dance at the Chapel Hill Seymour Senior Center. Come join us for some lively fun.
